Glass wine and spirit bottles to be eligible in QLD from November 1st

In an Australian-first, the Queensland Palaszczuk Government has announced it will expand its popular Container Refund Scheme ‘Containers for Change’ to include glass wine and spirit bottles from November 1, 2023. It means Queenslanders will get 10 cents for every glass wine and spirit bottle deposited in addition to the existing eligible containers.

The commitment to expand the scheme follows an extensive consultation period, where more than 6,600 Queenslanders shared their thoughts about including additional containers in the refund program. 98.1 per cent of participants were in favour of more containers being made eligible for refunds through the program.

The addition of glass wine and spirit bottles is expected to build on the existing benefits of the program, especially around the recovery of additional glass for remanufacturing.

TOMRA is excited to see additional containers be collected for recycling across our 10 depots and 17 Reverse Vending Machines. It’s a win for both the community and the environment.

Glass wine and pure spirit bottles will not be accepted at refund points before 1 November 2023.

Please ensure that the bottles are not broken and the labels are still in tact to ensure you get your refund.

At present, the scheme expansion does not include any other types of containers. Milk, cordial, etc, will all still be ineligible and can be recycled through your local kerbside bin.

The refund for wine and spirit bottles remains consistent at 10c.

At the time of writing, no other state scheme will include the expansion. However other state schemes have been examining the viability and demand for expansion and this may or may not change in the future. In addition, if the other schemes do decide to expand their eligibility, it may or may not be consistent with the changes that are occurring in the QLD scheme.
