TOMRA Acknowledgement of Country Wall Mural

On Wednesday 13th October, TOMRA Ipswich got a major makeover. Nearly every wall in the Recycling Centre has been given a fresh new look, sporting warm, vibrant colours, inspirational environmental fun-facts and 12 new hungry TOMBOTS, all ready to gobble up your empty drink containers.

A major component of this new interior signage is a unique, custom-made TOMRA Acknowledgement of Country wall mural, specially created for TOMRA by leading Indigenous designer, Leigh Harris from Ingeous Studios (https://ingeousstudios.com/)

Both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander designers were engaged in the creation process to ensure the Mural accurately depicts the diverse and culturally safe elements and represents all of the different cultures. In addition, TOMRA worked closely with the lead designer, to ensure the TOMRA values, beliefs and purpose were sensitively depicted and fully woven throughout the artistic symbols and colours in the design.

The modern Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander design elements represent TOMRA’s commitment to protecting the environment and respecting and recognizing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s cultures, lands and waters, as Australia’s First Peoples.

    Design Breakdown

The background elements of the design represent the diversity of First Nations cultures and land throughout Australia.

    • Lower Half – lands and waterways
    • Top Half –  seas, beachfront and Islands.
    • The stylized circular elements throughout the design represent the wide range of communities and towns in which TOMRA operate and the central circular “Clean Loop Recycling” icon symbolizes TOMRA’s commitment to the circular economy and an acknowledgement of Traditional Owners and Country.
