West Ipswich locals have successfully diverted more than 100 million drink containers from ending up in landfill or littered within the local community through the Queensland Containers for Change scheme, putting more than $10 million back in the pockets of the community.
Some of the groups who have benefited from cashing in at TOMRA West Ipswich since it opened in 2018 include local charities Meals on Wheels, Ipswich Hospice Care, and Alara Queensland.
TOMRA collection president Ryan Buzzell said it was fantastic to see Ipswich residents become such enthusiastic recyclers.
“100 million bottles is a major achievement and we are excited to see these numbers increase in the future,” he said.
For every 100 million bottles, 587,400,000 litres of water is saved, 4300000 kgs of material saved from landfill, 130,300,000 Megajoules of energy are saved and 12000000 kgs of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are cut.
When returning drink containers through Containers for Change, customers can keep the 10-cent refund for themselves or donate to a community group or charity.
“As an operator of the Containers for Change scheme, TOMRA is committed to encouraging Queenslanders to recycle their eligible containers to do their part to protect the environment around them. We strongly urge everyone to get involved and follow in Ipswich’s footsteps,” Mr Buzzell said.
The Ipswich centre is located next to Anaconda at 355 Brisbane Street, West Ipswich and is open seven days a week, from 7am to 5pm and open 9am to 5pm on public holidays.
More than 5 billion containers have been recycled through Containers for Change since the scheme commenced in November 2018.
